England’s all-conquering women’s football team the Lionesses are to play this year’s Nations League games at Wembley and Ashton Gate in Bristol, the FA has confirmed.
The Lionesses will take on Belgium in the second of their three home matches in Group A3 of the UEFA Women’s Nations League this spring and summer, with the likes of Alessia Russo and Leah Williamson coming to Ashton Gate for the match on Friday, April 4.
The game will kick off at 8pm, and stadium bosses are hoping for another sell-out. The last time England came to Bristol to play a home game was the climax of the Arnold Clark Cup, where they coincidentally played Belgium and ran out 6-1 winners.
Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman said the team were hoping for the same sort of support again. “We’re looking forward to returning to Bristol,” she said. “Taking the team across the country is always important to us and we had a great experience the last time we played there.”
At that 2023 cup final, there was a sell-out crowd of 26,169. “We have seen how the people in Bristol have celebrated women’s sports recently so I hope we will get a similar warm welcome again,” Sarina Wiegman added.
England’s two other home games in their Nations League group – against Spain and Portugal – will be played at Wembley, and the six-fixture group takes place in international break windows in February, April and at the end of the season in May and June.
Tickets for the Ashton Gate clash will go on sale via the FA, not via Ashton Gate, to My England Football members on February 4 with general sale starting from Friday, February 7.
