Scarborough, once hailed as the jewel of England’s north-east coastline, now receives a mix of reviews from both locals and holidaymakers.

The beach with its golden sands and lively atmosphere remains popular, drawing visitors to its scenic shores for everything from arcade fun to tranquil walks by the sea. Scarborough Beach’s beauty and exciting waterfront continue to attract those looking to bask in picturesque scenes.

However, people are raising concerns about the state of the town centre, citing it as rundown and affected by various social issues. On travel review platforms, users are openly sharing their views on the contrast between Scarborough’s beach and its town centre.

On TripAdvisor, one disappointed visitor said: “Scarborough is a very run-down town. The beach is its saving grace… but the town is dirty, and many shops have closed down.”

Another noted the unfortunate state of litter-strewn streets and shuttered storefronts, noting that while the beach is a delightful haven, the town desperately needs an overhaul, the Expressreports.

A third reviewer questioned why care for the town had dwindled, writing: “What has happened to Scarborough? We were saddened to see the amount of street litter, and crappy shops-there was nothing good on offer except one little gem of a fossil shop on the way into town.

“Why did people stop caring about this place, and the locals that live there, why aren’t they giving their council hell about the state of the town? It was almost like a dumping ground, we’ve never seen some much rubbish, including dead wild life on the streets.”

Scarborough’s safety concerns have been highlighted by both long-standing residents and newcomers, particularly in the town centre. Local Tesco worker David Wharton has noticed an uptick in shoplifting, often by groups, linking the troubling trend to drug and alcohol problems.

Businessman Jonathan Thompson has also voiced his worries, pointing out the issues arising from certain landlords who rent out properties to vulnerable people, leading to street drinking and disruptive behaviour. In a concerted response, North Yorkshire Police and the local council are ramping up actions to improve safety and cleanliness in the area.

Efforts include “Operation Vigilant”, targeting anti-social activities, and initiatives aimed at curbing street drinking. The police have committed to ensuring Scarborough’s town centre becomes a more inviting place for all.

Scarborough, despite facing some criticisms, remains a gem in the eyes of many who admire its coastal beauty and historical roots. Regular visitor Mike Crofts from Barnsley commended the town for its impressive historic buildings and striking natural landscape.

Local entrepreneur Caroline Bowne shared an optimistic view, insisting that Scarborough is “on the up,” with credit going to the devoted holiday-goers and day-trippers.

The town’s Italian Gardens and Peasholm Park continue to be favourite havens for tranquil strolls and restful breaks, drawing in both families and retirees.
