• A 17-year-old  was caught in a rental Benz doing 145 km/h in an 80-km/h zone near Ottawa
  • Two days later, a 19-year-old was nabbed for speeding at 114 km/h in a 60
  • Both offenders were in what police described as ‘borrowed cars’

A new driver, described as a 17-year-old male possessing a G2 license, was caught earlier this week near Ottawa taking a borrowed Mercedes-Benz to extra-legal speeds. In addition to the laundry list of legal problems, the youth will apparently also have to pay the car’s rental fee for the two weeks it is under lock and key of an impound yard.

Officers with the Ottawa Police Service allegedly clocked the young man doing 145 km/h on Limebank Road near the nation’s capital. After hauling him roadside to write citations for excessive speed, it was found the car was a rental unit, and the driver had borrowed it from his parents.

Charges laid included one for stunt driving, which resulted in the impound of the machine for 14 days, a stretch of time for which the youngster will presumably have to pay the rental company extra. Hope none of our readers had this particular Mercedes booked to rent in the next couple of weeks.

Reports of that incident were posted to the OPS account on Twitter (er, X) two days ago. Strangely, a markedly similar post was made just this morning, with officers bragging about capturing yet another teen travelling at felonious velocities in the area, one who is said to have been “borrowing dad’s car.” That 19-year-old youth is alleged to have ripped up to 114 km/h in a 60 zone.

In fact, this author had to examine these facts multiple times, since details of these traffic violations are so similar. Even the photo provided by police to their social media account looks the same, with a vehicle on the flat-deck and a patrol Ford Explorer lurking in the background. But the different tow truck confirms these are separate incidents.

Meanwhile, back on Limebank Road, a third driver – not a teen this time, but a boneheaded 24-year-old –  was caught later the same day doing 134 km/h in that street’s 80 zone.
