Derry-born footballer James McClean could be in hot water again after he described the town of Shrewsbury a “cesspit full of inbreds”.
The Wrexham winger hit out after being subjected to abuse by Shrewsbury Town fans on Thursday night after their clash ended with a 2-1 loss for McClean’s side.
There were reports that as well as being taunted, objects were also thrown at the Republic of Ireland international, who has often been targeted by fans in England due to his opposition to wearing a remembrance poppy.
A crunching tackle from Shrewsbury player Toto Nsiala led to angry exchanges between the players and more goading by Shewsbury fans.
McClean confronted the fans at the end of the match, but Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: “He’s fine. James is used to it wherever he goes. Fans get on his back home and away and sometimes it can be tough and spill over but he is used to it.”
However, McClean later took to social media to vent his anger.
“In fairness if I was born and raised in Shrewsbury I’d probably be this angry as well cause it’s an absolute cesspit full of inbreds,” he wrote on his Instagram story.
