A U.S. border patrol agent has been shot and killed during a traffic stop in Vermont, according to multiple news reports.

In a press release, Vermont State Police said there was a shooting in Coventry, Vermont, a town of around 1,000 people near the Canadian border.

WCAX, a Vermont-based TV network, reported that the unnamed border agent was shot in the neck and died. One suspect was killed, the network reported, and the other injured.

The shooting occurred shortly after 3 p.m., and just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed harsh measures to crack down on illegal immigration and declared a state of emergency on the United States’ southern border with Mexico.
