Even those with common names can sometimes face spelling challenges.
Many parents deliberate over the ease of spelling and pronunciation when picking a name for their baby, often a concern with unique names that aren’t familiar to most people and may not be spelt as one might expect.
However, one woman’s experience has highlighted that even conventional names can cause confusion, as she consistently receives her coffee order with her name misspelled. In a TikTok video that’s going viral, Felicity Campbell reveals that no matter what she tells the barista, her name is always a surprise on the cup.
Through a slideshow, Felicity showcased various interpretations of her name on coffee cups from different cafes. The first displayed “Foliseie”, the second was close with “Ferricity”, followed by “Flisty”, and another where the barista seemed to catch only half of her name, writing “City”.
One particularly inventive barista strayed far off course, penning “Philipsibity”. In an attempt to simplify things, Felicity told a barista her name was “Flick”, a usual short form for Felicity, but this too backfired hilariously with the name “Frick” ending up on her cup.
Recounting the ordeal with her name, Felicity was amused when she was handed a cup labelled “Filice”, which she noted was “at least spelt with an F” as opposed to other odd variations she’s encountered. The final straw was seeing her name written as “Filusity”.
The video detailing Felicity’s name mishaps struck a chord with viewers, sparking disbelief in the comments. The errors were so bizarre that some suggested it might be a “marketing strategy” to get names wrong for online attention.
One viewer shared their own experience: “I’m a Welsh Rhiannon, so I never have an issue with people spelling my name at home. I was not prepared to find Rhino scrawled on my coffee cup in London.” Another added: “My name is Jade. They wrote Jid. I decided I’d say Alex next time and they wrote Alice.”
But someone else asked: “Isn’t it a marketing thing where they purposely get it wrong so you’ll post it on social media? “.
