Shaun Murphy has revealed he plans on spending his huge £365,000 prize money on a birthday present for his other half, Jo, following his triumph at the Masters on Sunday.

The 42-year-old beat Kryen Wilson 10-7 to secure glory at Alexandra Palace and etch his name into the history books once again.

Murphy was excellent on Sunday, with the veteran admitting he thought the glory days ‘had gone’ a long time ago prior to his triumph.

And now, speaking to The Sun, he’s revealed he’ll be spending his money on a treat for his girlfriend, Jo, who watched on as he beat Wilson in north London.

Murphy said: “Well it’s my other half’s birthday today.

“So she’s had to sacrifice her birthday and put that on standby. We are going out tomorrow.

“I can’t tell you what we’re doing because it’s a surprise, even she doesn’t know yet, but tomorrow will be a good day.”

In addition to his £365,000 prize money, Murphy has also secured a £15,000 bonus for the maximum break of 147 in his semi-final victory over Mark Allen on Sunday.

The 42-year-old was cheered on by a jubilant crowd at Ally Pally and has now admitted he was blown away by the reception he received.

“When I took up snooker as an eight-year-old boy, I dreamt of moments like this and I’ve been really lucky with the game,” he continued.

“This will be a day and week that I’ll look back on for the rest of my life.

“Not to only win the event, but to beat the world champion in the final and take the maximum in one of these big events.

“The high break is something I’ve been trying to do for all of my career and I’ve ticked a few boxes this week.

“The crowd are a bit more vociferous here. They’re a bit more vocal than over crowds. The Crucible is almost church-like in comparison.

“It’s just an amazing arena and the crowd have been sensational in all the matches.

“You need that buzz sometimes. They were my 12th man this week.”

While it was a brilliant night for Murphy, it was a disappointing one for Wilson.

However, speaking after his defeat, the 33-year-old insisted he was still proud to make the final – while also revealing he’d be downing some jagerbombs now the tournament is over.

“I am 33 years old, coming into my prime and I am having an amazing season,” he said.

“Runner-up obviously isn’t what I wanted, but I’ve got Berlin next week, so I’ll go and smash it in Germany.
