Lonely Planet’s experts have identified a haven for lovers of sun, sea, and sand – and it’s on an island that remains relatively unnoticed by the globetrotting crowds.
The revered annual guide from Lonely Planet is meticulously crafted by their seasoned travel gurus. It spotlights the crème de la crème of global destinations to visit, encompassing not only cities and countries but also burgeoning travel trends.
When it comes to the planet’s finest coastal retreats, the top five, as curated by the travel authority, includes Sarakiniko Beach. This coastal treasure, nestled on the Greek island of Milos, particularly stands out among its peers.
Poised along the northern coastline within the Aegean Seas embrace, Sarakiniko Beach captivates visitors with its staggering aesthetics. Arguably the most photographed scene across the Aegean’s expansive waters, it beckons explorers with an otherworldly charm.
Its surreal allure is attributed to the stark, moon-like terrain and the sculptural quality of the white rocks, carved meticulously by aeons of tidal prowess and relentless winds, reports the Express.
Yet, these captivating formations owe their existence to a more fiery past; volcanic events long ago bequeathed this dramatic whitestone canvas upon the shore.
Further intrigue lies in the numerous coves and precipices that encircle the beach, including a semi-revealed shipwreck awaiting discovery by the adventurous.
Lonely Planet lavishes praise on this natural marvel, citing the “sun-bleached volcanic rocks that dip into a small deep turquoise stretch of the Aegean” as a sight to behold.
Despite its magnificence, Sarakiniko’s surrounding terrains are distinctly compact, eschewing the broad sandy beaches typically linked with exotic coastal destinations.
Lonely Planet has praised Sarakiniko for its stunning alabaster cliffs and caves, making it one of the world’s top destinations. The location is also perfect for sunbathing and snorkelling.
The travel experts suggest visiting Sarakiniko in September or October to avoid the crowds, or heading to the beach early in the morning during the high season.
One TripAdvisor review described the scenery as, “Scenery like from the moon. It is worth a visit but it can be difficult for some people to walk around or get to the water,”, but noted that it could be challenging for some people to navigate the terrain or reach the water.
Another reviewer enthused: “Extremely scenic beach with caves and cliffs to explore. One of a kind scenery and landscape. Must see on Milos.”
