New research has revealed that Gen Z are more likely to have coffee machines, hair tongs, and air fryers in their homes.
The survey of 2,000 adults found that the younger generation are less likely to see these devices as luxuries and instead view them more as a necessity to their homes.
Only 41 per cent of Gen Z respondents considered coffee machines a luxury. Similarly, only 30 per cent of Gen Z saw hair tongs as non-essential, compared to 55 per cent of Boomers.
The research also showed that Air Fryers have become increasingly common across all UK households, only 33 per cent of the younger generation see them as a luxury compared to 47 per of their older peers.
But despite these generational differences, there’s one particular appliance still going strong in UK households: the kettle. Half of all adults named the kettle as the first appliance they use each morning, and seven in ten boomers said it’s the first thing they switch on in the morning.
The study, commissioned by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) as part of Register My Appliance Week, highlights generational shifts in attitudes toward household gadgets.
AMDEA CEO Paul Hide said: “We are clearly a nation of appliance lovers, who appreciate the transformative effect they’ve had on our lives.”
He mentioned this was particularly strong for the younger generation who are excited by the future of smart tech. However, he also went on to urge consumers to check their appliances and get them registered.
“An estimated 40 million large appliances are unregistered, which means they are untraceable if a safety repair is needed,” he stated.
The trusty washing machine has emerged as the ultimate home essential, with a whopping 62 per cent of people across all age groups saying it’s the one appliance they can’t do without.
Moreover, when it comes to choosing new appliances, sustainability is taking a front seat for shoppers; a hefty 80 per cent of adults mark energy efficiency as a deciding factor, and 65 per cent won’t hit ‘buy’ without verifying the eco-friendly credentials of their new gear.
The research highlights that, irrespective of age, there’s a shared appreciation for household tech that not only makes life easier but is kind to our planet too.
