Motorists have been cautioned that neglecting to inform the DVLA about a condition many are experiencing today, January 20, could result in a fine. Blue Monday, dubbed the ‘saddest day of the year’, serves as a crucial time to raise awareness about the impact of mental health on driving safety.

Conditions such as depression and anxiety can seriously affect concentration, reaction times, and decision-making, all vital for safe driving. Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, stated: “Drivers who have been diagnosed with severe depression or anxiety are required to inform the DVLA if their condition or the medication they’re taking could impair their ability to drive safely.”

He added: “Drivers who fail to report their condition to the DVLA could face a fine of up to £1,000. They may also be prosecuted if they are involved in an accident due to the condition. Drivers should also inform their car insurance provider of their condition, as failing to do so may invalidate their insurance.”

Many medications commonly prescribed for depression, such as sedatives or antidepressants, can cause side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, or even blurring of vision. These side effects can significantly impact a driver’s ability to drive safely, particularly during the dark winter months when visibility and road conditions are already challenging, reports Plymouth Live.

A report has revealed that a 8.7 million individuals across the UK are on antidepressants, underlining the importance of understanding their effects on driving abilities. He advised: “Not everyone who experiences depression or anxiety is required to report their condition to the DVLA, so it’s always best to consult a GP to discuss symptoms. Those who experience mild depression or anxiety which doesn’t impact their memory or concentration may not need to report their condition to the DVLA.

“It’s also essential to be honest with the DVLA about medical conditions. Reporting a medical condition is straightforward and drivers can fill in a form online to report it. Taking these steps not only ensures compliance with the law but also helps to protect everyone on the road.”
