Derry City have gone for experience yet again in the transfer market with the signing of Dundalk veteran Robbie Benson.
The 32-year-old faced an uncertain future after his departure from Dundalk, following their relegation, but after a spell without a club he’s agreed a move to Derry, fitting the age profile of other close-season signings like Shane Ferguson and Liam Boyce as Tieran Lynch aims to build a side capable of challenging in 2025.
Benson won three league and two FAI Cup medals with the Oriel Park club, adding another Cup success with St Patrick’s Athletic in 2021.
Derry also signed former Northern Ireland international Carl Winchester, who joins from Shrewsbury Town on a two-year deal.
Belfast native Winchester was Shrewsbury’s player of the year last season and Town were eager to keep him on board but Winchester wanted to move back to Ireland for family reasons. He’s the latest senior international to join the City ranks, after Liam Boyce, Gavin Whyte and Shane Ferguson.
