Aldi customers can to make a major difference to the planet while enjoying a glass of wine. It’s all thanks to a new collaboration between the supermarket and an environmental charity.

The retailer has rolled out a private-label Chardonnay created in alliance with The Hidden Sea, with the mission of eliminating plastic from our oceans. For every bottle of Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay purchased by Aldi’s customers, an amount of ocean plastic equivalent to 10 regular plastic bottles will be retrieved.

Working alongside its global partner, ReSea Project, The Hidden Sea orchestrates extensive clean-up efforts to remove plastics from marine environments. Notably, Aldi is the pioneer UK grocery chain to collaborate with The Hidden Sea for an own-brand wine offering, reports the Mirror.

Building on its commitment to sustainability, last year Aldi introduced the nation’s first-ever supermarket brand paper wine bottles and groundbreaking eco-friendly flat plastic bottles. This move claimed the gold award for Sustainability Pack of the Year at The Grocer’s New Product and Packaging Awards 2024.

These innovative packaging solutions not only lessen the weight, but also substitute the primary materials compared to traditional glass counterparts, resulting in reduced emissions from manufacturing and transit processes. About 8 million pieces of plastic pollution enter the ocean every day. This plastic pollution is a major threat to marine life and ecosystems, claims the Ocean Literacy Portal.

Liz Fox, Aldi UK’s National Sustainability Director, said: “We know our customers want to shop more sustainably, which is why we’re pleased to be launching this unique wine that will support ongoing industry action to reduce ocean plastic. Our Buying Teams are always looking for ways to offer more sustainable options and we’re proud to be the first supermarket working with The Hidden Sea on our very own label Chardonnay.”

Justin Moran, co-founder of The Hidden Sea, added: “We are excited to collaborate with Aldi on this initiative, helping its customers champion ocean conservation by choosing our Chardonnay. Each bottle purchased will play a crucial role in funding cleanup projects that remove plastic waste from our oceans, helping to restore marine ecosystems.”

“It will be a great achievement to see the wine in stores nationwide and we’re proud that Aldi customers can join us on this mission for a healthier planet.” The new Chardonnay is priced at £7.49 per bottle and is available in stores now.
