The tragic scene unfolded at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday when the pedestrian was attempting to cross the four-series highway between the Hwy. 15 and Montreal Street exits, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported.
Police said the pedestrian ran across the westbound side of the highway and was struck by a tractor-trailer on the roadway, and then by a snowplow as a secondary incident.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not yet been confirmed, police said.
OPP officers in Frontenac County were assisted by Kingston Fire and Rescue and the Frontenac Paramedic Service, who were on scene of the collision as the highway was closed for several hours. Detours had been set up for westbound Hwy. 401 traffic at Hwy. 15, but the highway was reopened by mid-morning on Thursday.
A technical collision investigator with the OPP and the provincial coroner’s officer will continue to investigate the incident, police said.
Frontenac OPP is asking any witnesses to come forward with information or dash cam footage to assist in the investigation.
