BBC’s long-standing crime drama, Silent Witness, made a major comeback this week.
But despite its captivating forensic investigations that have been gripping viewers since 1996, the series didn’t manage to secure the prime time slot.
The chilling episode, which aired on Monday (January 6), introduced a new cast of forensic pathology experts investigating the eerie mystery of a woman found dead in a cave, attracting 3.5 million viewers. However, it was outperformed by ITV’s popular quiz show The Chase, hosted by the versatile Bradley Walsh.
The Chase returned three days after the premiere of Silent Witness’ 28th season, featuring four contestants hoping their collective knowledge would bag them a cash prize.
Despite its consistent format since 2009 and Silent Witness introducing fresh storylines each episode, The Chase reportedly peaked at 3.9 million viewers.
Consequently, it claimed the coveted 5pm slot, surpassing the crime drama’s season premiere. The viewership of Silent Witness, at 3.5 million, was shockingly low compared to its previous seasons.
Season 24, which premiered in January 2024, averaged 6.3 million viewers, while the preceding season in 2023 secured 6.36 million fans.
Following its return, Silent Witness faced immediate backlash on social media over the passionate scenes within minutes of the episode, reports the Express.
Recently engaged Dr. Nikki Alexander, played by Emilia Fox, and Jack Hodgson, portrayed by David Caves, couldn’t resist packing on the PDA, much to the surprise of fans as they’ve typically kept their romance under wraps.
Their steamy office kiss, however, was unexpectedly gatecrashed by a delivery man.
One viewer vented their annoyance online: “#SilentWitness. Already the kissing is getting on my nerves,” while another questioned the new dynamic with a post: “I’m not dreaming this right? We’re starting this season with office flirting?”
