Maro Itoje has emerged as the leading candidate to take over as England rugby captain ahead of the Six Nations, with head coach Steve Borthwick considering a significant leadership change.
The Saracens forward could replace current captain Jamie George when Borthwick names his squad on Tuesday.
According to the Daily Mail, source close to the England camp have revealed discussions are underway about altering the team’s leadership structure just weeks before the Six Nations begin.
George’s position as captain has come under scrutiny following concerns about his playing time in recent Tests.

The experienced hooker, who took the captaincy after the 2023 World Cup, has frequently been substituted in the final quarter of England’s matches throughout 2024.
These late-game absences have coincided with crucial moments, with George watching from the sidelines as England suffered late defeats.
Questions have now emerged about whether he remains a guaranteed starter in the XV.
Itoje’s candidacy is supported by his status as one of England’s most consistent performers on the international stage.
The second-row forward has already taken on leadership responsibilities this season, serving as captain for his club side Saracens.

While Itoje has never previously held the position of England squad captain, he has long been regarded as one of the team’s key standard bearers during matches.
Former England coach Sir Clive Woodward has already voiced his support for a leadership change in his Mail Sport column.
“George can still play a big role in this England side and is hugely respected within the England team, but he isn’t at the top of his game. I don’t think he should be captain. Why? Because he never plays 80 minutes,” Woodward said.
Adding to the pressure on George’s position, Luke Cowan-Dickie has emerged as the Premiership’s in-form hooker and could start against Ireland in Dublin.
Borthwick is set to announce his Six Nations squad on Tuesday lunchtime, with the captaincy decision expected to be a key talking point.
The potential leadership change comes at a crucial time for England as they prepare for their Six Nations campaign.
