Kingston Police said on Jan. 11 at around 1 p.m., employees at a local waste management facility were sorting items in a scrap metal disposal container when they found what they believed to be a grenade.
They contacted the police, who evacuated the facility and determined the item was in fact a live grenade with the pin still intact.
The Ontario Provincial Police’s explosive devices unit was called in to the scene, and they safely disposed of the grenade, according to a news release.
Kingston Police said the circumstances surrounding the grenade, and how it ended up in a waste disposal container, are currently unknown.
No injuries were reported, and police said there will likely not be an investigation since it was “essentially found in a pile of trash/scrap.”
“I think at this point it would be quite difficult to determine its origin,” Kingston Police Const. Anthony Colangeli said Monday.
