A former MLB slugger is hoping to get a few more hits – but not at the plate, on some merchandise he has posted on Facebook Marketplace.
Jose Canseco, one of baseball’s biggest stars of the 1980s and ‘90s, reportedly has posted several personal items on the online trading post in hopes to raise some quick cash.
Among the items listed, according to the U.S. Sun, are a personalized signed poker table, some ostrich leather boots, and flash wheel rims.
“Absolutely stunning Jose Canseco custom signature poker table,” a product description reads. “One of a kind in new like condition.”
The table is on offer for a staggering US$25,000 while the 24-inch Rolls Royce wheels and tires are available for $4,500.
Canseco also has put up a 2021 custom-made Triumph Rocket motorcycle with fewer than 1,000 km on it for $17,000.
According to the outlet, the six-time all-star is hoping to use money from the sales to help fund his new venture, PX40/40.
“It’s the future of power hitting,” the product’s website claims and it will “revolutionize the art of power-hitting and swinging, not just in baseball and softball but also on the golf course.”
During Canseco’s career, the two-time World Series champion reportedly earned an estimated $40 million.
But he fell from grace in the late ’90s during the MLB steroid scandal and blew most of his earnings before filing for bankruptcy in 2012.
In 2019, he opened a car wash in Las Vegas which struggled and was put up for sale in 2013. The Yelp page for the business claims it’s “closed temporarily.”
Canseco’s financial struggles have been well-documented.
His daughter Josie, a model, addressed her family’s financial situation in an Instagram post two years ago.
“To everyone saying I come from ‘rich money’ because I’m a ‘Canseco,’ do your research,” she wrote.
“My family’s money was gone by the time I was 6 or 7 due to bankruptcy. I’ve had to work hard not only to maintain my family name but also to pay my bills — because no one else did that for me.”
During an appearance on the TV show Inside Edition, Jose revealed that his two divorces were among his many financial challenges, estimating their cost being $7-$8 million.
Canseco played 17 seasons in the majors, rising to stardom with the Oakland Athletics.
He played one season for the Blue Jays in 1998, earning a Silver Slugger award after hitting 46 home runs and racking up 107 RBIs.
He famously hit one of the longest home runs in the history of the Rogers Centre (then known as SkyDome), clubbing a blast that hit the scoreboard in centre field.
