Calgary police homicide investigators are trying to piece together what led to a suspicious death after a body was found in downtown Calgary on Sunday morning.
Police were called to the 700 block of 5th Street S.W. shortly before 5:30 a.m., when a security guard found a man unresponsive on the east sidewalk, said Calgary police Staff Sgt. John Guigon.
When officers arrived at the scene, they determined the man had died.
A number of streets downtown and in the Beltline were closed Sunday morning as a result of the incident, as police investigators believe the crime may have occurred somewhere other than where the man’s body was found.
“We located during our canvas numerous blood trails in the area,” Guigon said. “We haven’t been able to ascertain what happened or where this happened.”
How the man died wasn’t immediately known, nor were suspect descriptions available.
The victim’s identity is also to be determined, said Guigon, who added he expected the medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy by end of day on Monday.
In the meantime, police are looking for help from the public to investigate the man’s death.
“We’re trying to figure out if anyone saw anything, or if there’s CCTV of the incident,” Guigon said. “Dashboard camera footage would also be helpful.”
