Genevieve Morrissey has been approved as a replacement for Aimee Maguire in Ireland’s squad for the U19 World Cup which starts in Malaysia later this week.

Left-arm spinner Maguire, one of the rising stars in Ed Joyce’s full international team, was reported for having a suspect bowling action during Friday’s first one-day international against India and will undergo tests in the next fortnight.

If her bowling arm is seen to straighten more than the permitted 15 degrees, and her action is found to be illegal, the 18-year-old will be required to take a remedial course before she can bowl again for Ireland.

Although Maguire is officially still allowed to bowl until the test results are verified, she was omitted from the Ireland team that lost to India by 116 runs in Rajkot on Sunday to go 2-0 down in the three-match World Championship series.

Despite two heavy defeats, the Girls in Green have again shown promising signs of improvement, recording their highest score against India of 238-7 on Friday and then bettering it with 254-7 in reply to a mammoth 370-5.

Wicketkeeper Christina Coulter Reilly starred with a top score of 80, which featured 10 boundaries, while opener Sarah Forbes made an impressive 38 and former skipper Laura Delany weighed in with 37.

“Christina was fearless and it was great to watch from the sidelines,” skipper Gaby Lewis said. “We made a higher total than the last game and that’s a positive for the future.”
