Football fans have called on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to be sacked after the Gunners lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The match in north London went to penalties after Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel had scored, while Altay Bayindir also denied Martin Odegaard from 12 yards.

The United goalkeeper then became a hero in the shootout, making another save to deny Kai Havertz.

Joshua Zirkzee, who was booed by his own fans just weeks ago, then converted his effort to fire United through to the next round of the competition.

The defeat comes just days after Arsenal lost to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, while they’ve struggled for consistency in the Premier League this term.

And angry fans of the Gunners have now called on Arteta to go, having won just one trophy since his appointment in 2019.

“Arteta’s 6 year rebuild got a Covid Fa cup and two times runners up in Epl. Sack that fraud in the morning!” said one user.

A second fumed: “Mikel Arteta let the hype got to him and he thinks he is among the best coaches in the world sack this man now.”

“Arsenal board if they value the club tradition, should sack Arteta and bring in another coach 5 years is enough,” were the words of a third user.

Another said: “#Arsenal should sack Arteta and hire that set piece coach because that’s all they are about.”

And a fifth raged: “We need to sack Arteta… Cmon… Arteta has lost his way, he project has failed.”

While it was a disappointing day for Arsenal, it was a huge occasion for United.

They have endured a nightmare season under both Amorim and Erik ten Hag but now, after beating Arsenal and drawing with Liverpool, seem to have turned a corner.

Fernandes was delighted after helping United to victory.

And the playmaker hailed Bayindir, too, saving he’s ‘top class’ and deserves his moment of glory.

“Obviously the circumstances of the game we played with one less we suffered a lot but we sacrificed a lot as a team and at the end you get this,” he said.

On his team-mate, he continued: “It’s a big moment for him, the first penalty and another save here and we are really happy for him.

“It’s tough to be second goalkeeper, he came here to play, whenever he gets his chance he’s top class for us, he’s top class in training, he’s always available for everyone and he truly deserves this moment.

“I know we want to celebrate and everything but our focus is now Southampton, that is when we have to back it up.

“The big games against Liverpool, Arsenal, everyone steps up because it’s a big game.
