A woman received a round of applause for standing her ground when her boyfriend suggested she rename her cat.
The 27-year-old shared she adopted a feline friend named Luna two years ago, who has since become an major part of her life, even helping her through a tough break-up last year.
Her new partner, Tom, age 29, argued she should change the pet’s name to avoid awkwardness because it’s the same as his sister’s. Turning to Reddit for advice, she wrote: “I’ve started dating someone new, Tom, and things have been going really well.
“Recently, we decided to move in together, which I was very excited about. Tom loves Luna, and Luna seems to like him too. Everything seemed perfect until Tom dropped a bombshell.
“Tom has a sister named Luna, 24. He mentioned that it’s weird for him to call my cat the same name as his sister and asked if I would consider changing her name to avoid confusion. I laughed at first, thinking he was joking, but he was serious. He suggested names like Shadow or Misty, but I can’t imagine calling her anything other than Luna.”
She informed him Luna responds to her name, and any change now would only breed chaos. She asserted: “I stood my ground. I even suggested using nicknames or calling her ‘Lulu’ as a compromise, but he insists that it’s still too similar and uncomfortable for him.
“The situation worsened when Tom’s sister discovered the name and sided with her brother, claiming it was disrespectful to keep it. She even accused me of being insensitive to their feelings. Now Tom is upset, causing tension between us. Some friends believe I should change the name to maintain peace, while others think it’s unreasonable to expect me to change my cat’s name.”
Seeking to know if she’s wrong for refusing to change the name, she turned to social media for opinions. One user replied: “Dump the boyfriend, keep the cat name. Pro tip, maybe his sister can change her name since it’s just a name.”
Another user added: “You don’t rename your cat. That’s just a weird request. Tell your boyfriend to grow a pair and let his sister know she can go screw herself.” A third user said: “Getting offended over a cat’s name while being 29 and 24 isn’t normal, And Tom being kind of alright with it until his sister found out isn’t a good sign either.”
