A 28-year-old man is sought for two violent sexual assaults in as many days in Durham Region this week.

Durham Regional Police say the first incident saw a woman attacked at knifepoint at an apartment building near St. Lawrence St. and Simcoe St. S., in Oshawa, just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

“A male armed with a knife sexually assaulted a female in the lobby of the building,” Const. Nicholas Gluckstein said in a statement released Thursday.

He said the assailant and victim left the area prior to police arrival.

“Officers searched the area and located the victim a short distance away suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries,” Gluckstein added.

The next day, around 1:10 p.m., the same man was allegedly seen in the area of Harwood Ave. S. and Hunt St., in Ajax, where it is believed he sexually assaulted a second victim.

Police described the man they are looking for as white, 25 to 30 years old, with a heavy build, and blond/orange hair.

Investigators subsequently identified the suspect as Evan Derek Sweet.

They released an image of the suspect on Wednesday along with a public safety warning, urging anyone who sees him to call 911 immediately.

Evan Derek Sweet, 28, of no fixed address, is wanted for robbery, sexual assault, and assault causing bodily harm.

Anyone with cellphone, dashcam, surveillance footage or information about this or similar incidents is asked to call the Special Victims Unit at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5316, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
