The Food Standards Agency (FDA) has published an urgent recall over two specific health supplements. The products, sold by UK-based TriOn Pharma, are both oral vitamin D solutions, with the nutrient often consumed to bolster bone, muscle or immune health.
But authorities fear that ‘Aactive D3 Drops’ (20ml) and ‘Aactive D3 Solution’ (50ml) products with best before dates of November 2025 may contain too much vitamin D3. Consumption may therefore give rise to various harmful symptoms including nausea, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, ‘anorexia’ and cardiac dysrhythmias.
The latter refers to a condition which triggers an irregular heartbeat either too fast, over 100 beats per minute, or too slow at less than 60. Certain pre-existing health issues, including high blood pressure and sleep apnoea, can heighten your risk of developing this.
An alert from the FDA reads: “High levels of vitamin D3 have been found in the products listed above. Excessive intakes of vitamin D can cause various adverse health effects because of hypercalcaemia (high blood calcium level).
“Symptoms and signs may include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, weakness, lethargy, constipation and non-specific aches and pains, as well as thirst, polyuria, weight loss and cardiac dysrhythmias.” TriOn Pharma has also displayed an alert regarding its two products, but stressed that batches are being ‘recalled as a precautionary measure’.
You can check if you’ve bought an affected batch by examining the packets of each vitamin D3 product. The 20ml oral drops will have a batch number of ‘LS23317’ and were first distributed on July 16, 2024, with a best before date of November 2025.
Meanwhile, the 50ml oral solution will have a batch number of ‘LS23318’ and were first issued on May 13, 2024, but include the same best before date of November 2025. Both are entitled ‘Aactive D3 2000 iu/ ml containing Colecalciferol(Vitamin D3) 2,000 iu/ml’ too.
Customers can return these products for a full refund without a receipt. For further information you can contact TriOn Pharma on 02392 255770 or [email protected].
The product recall follows another from luxury beauty brand Liberty amidst fears over one of its Christmas products. The London-based department store sold the ‘Tonka Candle’ as part of its 2024 Beauty Advent Calendar, but now believes it ‘may burn unsafely’.
In a recent warning posted to its site, the store said: “A very small number of customers have notified us that the flame of the Tonka Candle by Granado may burn unsafely. We take the safety of our customers very seriously and so as a precautionary measure we are asking all customers to discontinue use of the product immediately and safely dispose of it.
“Where we have customer contact details, we will be contacting those customers who have purchased the Liberty Beauty Advent Calendar and are in possession of the Tonka 80g Candle. We kindly ask all customers who purchased the Liberty Beauty Advent Calendar as a gift to immediately share this message with the recipient.”
Despite this, Granado stated that its products ‘were not defective’ and that ‘warnings and proper handling instructions were clearly highlighted on the packaging’. The company also said that it has ‘a long-standing commitment to the quality’ of its items.
Granado’s Marketing and Sales Director Sissi Freeman told DevonLive: “In the past two years alone, we have produced over half a million candles in our own factory, and this issue has never occurred before. We are strongly committed to sustainability and quality in our production process – for example, our candles are made with 100% plant-based wax and undergo a rigorous quality control process.”
