Air fryer users are in shock after discovering a concealed part of their handy kitchen gadgets that appears to be filthy. Known for their ability to crisp up frozen foods, turn out delightful baked goods, warm up leftovers, and even cook an entire Sunday roast, air fryers have become a go-to in the kitchen owing to their versatility.
These appliances come in assorted designs and sizes, presenting themselves as energy-efficient substitutes to conventional ovens. Beyond the advantage of cost savings, they streamline and accelerate cooking activities while offering a healthier method to prepare various beloved dishes.
Nevertheless, to ensure your air fryer functions effectively, maintaining a regimen of cleaning and maintenance is crucial, with specialists emphasizing the importance of cleansing the basket subsequent to each session of use.
Yet, despite these guidelines, individuals have only recently become aware of a less visible compartment within their air fryers. Taking to TikTok, user @sarahlifestyleandfood shared a clip revealing the process of removing the basket to expose the area above it, where the heating element is located, reports the Mirror.
She wrote: “Do I pretend I didn’t notice the absolute state of the top of my air fryer or have an absolute meltdown? ” They further added in the video’s caption: “Off to B&M to buy every single bit of cleaning equipment I can find to clean this beast. I’m so upset.”
The comments section was filled with equally shocked reactions, with one user writing: “Omg! Stop it! I noticed mine this afternoon! Knocked me sick.”
Another shared: “It’s why I got rid of mine. I couldn’t get that top part clean and it absolutely smelt rotten every time I switched it on,” while a third person commented: “This is my sign to not check what mine looks like, what I don’t know can’t hurt me.”
However, despite the unappealing appearance of the heating element, it’s essential not to give it a deep clean using numerous products. As each air fryer model is unique, it’s best to consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for specific instructions.
For instance, Phillips recommends simply unplugging the air fryer, ensuring it’s cool, and then turning it upside down to access the heating element.
According to their online cleaning guide, a soft sponge with hot water should be used to clean the interior and heating element. Additionally, they advised: “If necessary, food residues stuck to the heating element can be removed with a soft to medium bristle brush. Do not use a steel wire brush or a hard-bristle brush, as this might damage the coating of the heating element.”
After completing the cleaning process, it’s recommended to turn on the air fryer and let it run for a few minutes without any food inside, allowing loosened residues to fall into the pan.
