A boiler expert has emphasised the importance of knowing how to heat your home effectively during the winter months. Proper heating methods can ensure your home stays warm without incurring excessive bills or risking frozen pipes.
The specialist advises against simply turning up the heat when it gets cold, suggesting instead to maintain a consistent temperature. They recommend an “ideal temperature” of 18C to 20C throughout the colder season for both comfort and boiler efficiency.
The expert from New Boiler Installations Glasgow explained: “To avoid frozen pipes, you should set a minimum temperature on your boiler during winter.”
“Even when you’re not at home, it’s advisable to keep your thermostat at a minimum of 10C to prevent costly pipe-freezing issues.”
They also highlighted the benefits of smart thermostats, which allow precise control over heating systems and can be programmed to match daily routines. When temperatures drop to freezing, water in the pipes can freeze and expand, leading to cracks or bursts, causing significant water damage if a pipe bursts, reports the Express.
To mitigate this risk, the expert suggests insulating pipes in unheated areas or where they are exposed, using insulation sleeves or foam pipe insulation, commonly referred to as pipe lagging.
If you’re planning a winter getaway, it’s advisable to turn off your mains stop tap and open the lowest sink or bath tap to alleviate the initial pressure on the pipework.
