If you’re struggling with hair loss and can’t figure out why your locks are thinning and damaged, a hairdresser has suggested that a popular hairstyle could be the culprit.

If you’re hoping to grow out your hair, you may have invested in expensive products that promise to deliver impressive results – but you could be sabotaging all that effort by styling your hair in a certain way.

Taking to TikTok, content creator Rachel Valentine said: “I’m a hairdresser, and I’m going to show you probably the most damaging way that you can wear your hair.” She revealed that many of us might be guilty of this damaging habit daily, which could explain why our hair isn’t in the condition we would hope.

Demonstrating how she puts her hair up in a “messy bun” with a bobble, Rachel warned: “I know that shoving your hair up in a messy bun is sometimes the quickest thing to do to get your hair out of your face, but it is so damaging in so many ways.” But why?

According to Rachel, because the style is often very tight, it puts tension on areas around the hairline at the side. This could lead to traction alopecia.

Secondly, the ends of our hair, especially if bleached, are prone to breakage in such a style. “They’re all caught up, they’re all intertwined, and when you take it out, it’s probably gonna be super knotty,” she explained.

“Thirdly, a lot of people do this when their hair is wet, which is even worse. Our hair is so fragile when it’s wet, and especially in a style like this, it’s gonna cause so much damage.”

In the comments, haircare enthusiasts were quick to chime in, admitting they needed to ditch this hairstyle even though they found it really tough to give up. One stylist confessed: “My toxic trait is doing this every day but with silk scrunches and thinking that makes it okay. I’m a hairdresser.”

“Me every day for a billion years and wondering why my hair is thinning and damaged,” quipped another. Another person added: “I literally wear my hair like this every day! it’s bleached and I do it while it’s wet. Fix me please.”

HairMD explains further: “Choosing the right hairstyles, like loose braids, ponytails with scrunchies, and low buns, can help prevent further hair loss. Should you be facing significant hair loss, a dermatologist or trichologist would be your best bet. They’ll get to the root of the problem and figure out the ideal treatment plan tailored to your situation.”
