As the curtain fell on Gavin and Stacey last month, Melanie Walters, who portrays Gwen in the series, has hinted at the possibility of starring alongside another cast member in a spin-off show.
During a recent episode of the Off The Telly podcast, host Natalie Cassidy asked Melanie if she would consider a show centred around her character and Dave’s life together.
Melanie left fans in suspense with her response: “I don’t know, I don’t know.”
Throughout the series, Melanie’s character was often seen caring for others, but it wasn’t until the final episode that we saw her prioritise herself and her love life, becoming romantically involved with Dave Coaches, played by Steffan Rhodri.
While Melanie remained tight-lipped about the potential for a spin-off featuring her on-screen partner, she suggested that another cast member would be thrilled to see a revival of Gavin and Stacey, despite the finale airing just last month.
Joanna, who co-hosts the podcast and played Stacey Shipman on the show, revealed: “Anytime anybody asks Larry (Lamb, who plays Gavin’s dad Mick Shipman) though, he always goes ‘yes, of course!’.”
The sitcom Gavin & Stacey quickly cemented its place in viewers’ hearts after debuting on our screens in May 2007, with its success marked by strong ratings and a rapidly growing fanbase.
Following its initial popularity, the show returned for subsequent series before drawing to a close last month with an emotional Christmas special that fans had eagerly awaited, reports Wales Online.
Reflecting on the final day of filming, co-creator and star James Corden shared some behind-the-scenes feelings during an appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show’, saying: “Everyone was there at the end with lots of crying. Joanna who plays Stacey pretty much cried every day. There were lots of goodbyes. It was very emotional.”
Before making her name as Gwen in Gavin and Stacey, Melanie appeared in a whole host of TV shows and even stage performances down the years. But, she was probably most well-known for playing Valerie Jennings in ITV’s Coronation Street in 1991.
