BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood found herself a little flustered on Thursday’s show when her co-host playfully called attention to her previous mix-up on air.
In the morning’s episode, viewers noted a change in the presenting team as Naga Munchetty appeared alongside Nina Warhurst, instead of the usual pairing with Charlie Stayt who was absent.
Naga couldn’t resist pointing out the similarity between her own name and Nina’s as she ribbed Carol for a previous slip where she had confused her name. As Carol concluded her weather segment with predictions of colder temperatures, she addressed the hosts, saying: “A lot of dry weather, it’s going to be a cold day, perhaps just not quite as cold as it’s going to be today or tonight, Nina and Naga.”
In the studio, Naga cheekily commented: “You’re going to struggle with Nina and Naga, Naga and Nina today aren’t you? You struggle with calling me Nana!”
This teasing referred to an occasion where Carol mistakenly called her ‘Nana’, which is actually the name of her producer. Caught off guard, Carol couldn’t help but burst into laughter, covering her head in response to her earlier faux pas, reports the Express.
Naga then turned to Nina to ask if Carol had ever made the same mistake with her, to which Nina wittily replied: “No, only you Naga!”
As Carol continued to chuckle about it, and Naga kept the banter going, Nina praised Carol with a supportive remark, adding: “She never struggles with anything! Thank you, Carol.”
But Carol wasn’t the only one left embarrassed on the show as Naga herself faced a playful ‘shaming’ from her co-star. The presenters reflected on how quickly time is flying by while discussing the upcoming release of The Vicar of Dibley stamps by The Royal Mail.
As they watched a clip from the iconic sitcom, Nina remarked: “Looking at that Naga, it’s the kind of show where I go, ‘Oh, it was only a few years ago’. But no, it was such a long time ago!”
Naga concurred with the sentiment, sharing: “We’re already at the time where we stop saying Happy New Year, apparently. I don’t think I’ve said it to Carol, though.”
Caught off-guard by this revelation, Nina teasingly chastised her: “Have you not? ! Shame on you.” However, Naga quickly explained she had yet to encounter Carol.
During the transition to Carol for the weather, Naga confirmed that she indeed did send New Year greetings, having checked and found a message sent early on New Year’s Day.
With a playful dig at Naga, Nina said: “I’m sure you’re not the only one who can’t remember everything about the morning of New Year’s Day.” Without words, the pair exchanged an amused look and laughter, before continuing to the next part of the show.
BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
