The Maple Leafs have a new logo.
Specifically, an Indigenous-inspired logo.
Designed in partnership with Anishinaabe-kwe artist Jennifer Taback of Design de Plume, the logo was unveiled on Wednesday and was made in recognition of the Leafs’ annual Indigenous Celebration Game, taking place this Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks at Scotiabank Arena.
The logo will be used in various digital platforms and on clothing and souvenirs.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to re-imagine such a well-known logo and share my interpretation with both my community and the Maple Leafs community,” Taback said in a release issued by the team. “As an Anishinaabe-kwe from Shawanaga First Nation, I’m passionate about showcasing our cultural and visual storytelling through design and art.
“Our artistic style emphasizes line work and the iconography of meaningful symbols, and it was fascination to bend both traditional and Western elements.”
Included in the logo are shades of blue to represent the waters of Georgian Bay, a beaded Maple Leaf with strawberries beneath it, meant to embody the teachings of love and the importance of a strong heart. Sweetgrass and cedar are seen in the logo, and a dreamcatcher honours Taback’s parents. In the centre of the logo is a turtle to represent Turtle Island.
Part of the game-day content on the Leafs’ social channels will include a piece celebrating coach Craig Berube’s Indigenous background.
Also, a limited quantity of signed Leafs Indigenous practice jerseys will be available for auction at . All proceeds from the auction will benefit ENAGB, a youth agency focused on providing cultural employment, life skills, holistic wellness and recreational opportunities to youth.
