As a cold snap is set to grasp the UK in the coming days, black ice and icy surfaces are a major worry for daily commutes and the school run.

Frost, and the slippiness that comes with it, bring with them inconvenience and real risks for falls that could leave us with serious injuries.

However, commercial ice-melting sprays are not the only solution: you can find safer and eco-friendly options to dissolve the ice on your porch or driveway right in your kitchen or at the supermarket for less than a pound.

According to Lottomart, sprinkling a mixture of baking soda and water on the frozen area is a most valid alternative to chemical-laden de-icers.

Lottomarts specialists point out: “Choosing to melt ice with a solution including baking soda instead of a commercial de-icer has some real perks. It has a lower price tag, fewer chemicals, and chances are, you already have it in your kitchen.”

Baking soda is far less alkaline than rock salt and traditional solutions making it gentler on brick, metal, glass and concrete and a more advisable solution for pet owners and garden lovers.

The expert continued: “Baking soda is the least abrasive corrosive option compared to salt, cat litter, or commercial de-icers. It’s safer for your driveway, neighbouring plants, garden, and pets, and you don’t need to worry about long-term damage from harsh chemicals.”

How to make the baking soda solution

Firstly, you’ll need to get your hands on 100g of baking soda and 4.5 litres of warm water. Mix these together in a large container, stirring continuously until the soda is fully dissolved.

Once you’ve got your solution, apply it directly onto icy areas such as driveways, paths, garden walkways, or patios. After a short while, you should see the ice begin to melt.

To stop the ice from forming again, sprinkle some sand over the previously icy area. This will provide extra grip and further decrease the chance of slipping.
