BBC presenter Stephen Nolan has issued an update to followers on social media concerned about his wellbeing while he is in California during the fires affecting that region.

Mr Nolan has assured people he is “safe” in Santa Cruz, spending time at a “beautiful beach in Carmel.”

Thousands of people have had to evacuate from suburbs of Los Angeles as out of control wildfires have spread into the city after starting in a nature reserve.

The governor of the state, Gavin Newsom, has declared a state of emergency, and the LA Fire Department has appealed to off-duty firefighters to help in battling the blazes.

The presenter of the Nolan Show said that southern California has, “such a special place in my heart & I’m thinking about all those who are affected by the fires.”

Mr Nolan shared a picture of himself on X sleeping on a bench, as he confirmed he was safe while visiting the Western American state.

He said that it was “really lovely” that many people had been in touch to check in on his safety.

He added: “The people staying at my house back home in NI while I’m away say the weather is awful – so stay safe!”
