Nick Kyrgios has opened up on his latest injury, with the tennis star still hopeful of playing at the Australian Open later this month.
The 29-year-old was set to partner with Novak Djokovic at Melbourne Park following their crowd-pleasing performance at the Pat Rafter Arena last week, only to withdraw following his setback.
The Australian tennis star underwent an ultrasound which revealed the strain, casting some doubt over his participation in the first Grand Slam of the year.
Speaking to 7News, Kyrgios expressed optimism about his chances of competing in Melbourne, stating: “I’ve still got five days up my sleeve.”

The tennis star outlined his recovery plan, noting he would avoid serving for several days whilst maintaining scheduled practice sessions.
“It’s not too serious,” Kyrgios reassured fans, adding that participating in Thursday’s exhibition match with Djokovic “is probably not the best preparation.”
“I’ll just take it day-by-day and give myself the best chance.”

Kyrgios recently returned to action at the Brisbane International, where he was narrowly defeated by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a third-set tiebreak.
Despite the loss, he showcased impressive skills that dispelled concerns about rustiness after his time away from the sport.
His doubles partnership with Djokovic particularly energised the crowd at Pat Rafter Arena, with fans loving the sight of the duo playing together.

“I wouldn’t be playing if I didn’t think I could give [fans] some entertainment and some fun on the court,” Kyrgios said.
“I felt that in Brisbane. I only played three matches, but I felt like they were the three most entertaining matches in those three weeks.”
Reflecting on his career status, Kyrgios emphasised his intention to savour his remaining time in tennis.
