The fifth season of The Masked Singer has launched on ITV, captivating audiences with its enigmatic performances. Joel Dommett has returned as the host, accompanied by a star-studded judging panel comprising Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, Jonathan Ross, and this series, Maya Jama.
The premiere featured an array of intriguing contenders including Dressed Crab, Spag Bol, Snail, Tattoo, Teeth, and King Fisher. Pufferfish delivered a standout performance of Chappell Roan’s ‘Good Luck, Babe!, sparking buzz about the contestant’s real identity amongst viewers.
Speculation is rife among fans, and many are convinced that Jamie-Lynn Spears is the celebrity inside the Pufferfish costume. Social media users have been quick to suggest the US actress and singer, Britney Spears’ younger sister, as the masked talent.
On Reddit, a fan’s post read: “Okay so this wasn’t my idea but I’ve seen it somewhere and totally agree with it. Pufferfish could be Jamie-Lynn Spears?”
They proceeded to detail the clues, including the possible significance of a spider from the clue package, which they connected to Jamie’s stint on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! last year, and noted Pufferfish’s American accent as another potential giveaway, reports the Mirror.
Another hint was a dice showing the sum of 11, which some speculate could be a nod to Jamie’s rise to fame at age 11. The line ‘Runs in the family’ might be a reference to her well-known sister, Britney, while ‘Small but just as impressive’ could be a cheeky allusion to her being the younger and shorter sibling.
Reddit users chimed in with their agreement on the theory, with one commenting: “That’s exactly who I was thinking! ” and another chiming in with: “Omg I think it’s her.”
In other news, some fans of The Masked Singer have voiced their dissatisfaction with the latest series, levelling accusations of inauthenticity at the show. A number of viewers are under the impression that the judges’ guesses are being swayed by the powers that be behind the scenes.
On social media, viewers didn’t hold back their opinions on the matter. One viewer remarked: “The fact that the judges are pretending not to immediately know Kingfisher is Harry Hill, just proves they’re not allowed to make any real attempt at guessing who it is.”
Another added their two cents, saying: “Everything feels forced. I don’t get the point in judges picking who sings next. Are they just coming up with new ways to make the episode longer. I prefer series with Rita involved.”
The Masked Singer continues on Sunday 12 January on ITV1 and ITVX.
