One of the most exciting events on the annual U SPORTS calendar is back for an 11th year as the University of Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal University Cougars get set to take over the Scotiabank Saddledome for the 11th annual Crowchild Classic on Friday, Jan. 31.
The Crowchild Classic is the yearly celebration of university sport in Calgary. It is the largest gathering of students in the city each year and will once again feature a hockey doubleheader, with the women’s game set for 4:30 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 7:30 p.m.
Beyond the rivalry and playing in front of the largest crowd of the season, these games annually live up to the hype. Three of the four hockey programs involved currently rank in the U SPORTS Top 10, while 12 of the previous 20 contests at the Dome have been decided by just a one-goal margin, including seven overtime games.
Through the first 10 instalments of the crosstown rivalry on NHL ice, an impressive 97,764 fans have shown their support for university hockey in the city of Calgary.
This event holds multiple U SPORTS hockey attendance records. In the first instalment in 2012, the Crowchild Classic broke a 42-year-old Canada West attendance record and set a U SPORTS men’s hockey attendance record with a total of 12,859 fans in 2016.
Tickets are now available for this year’s Crowchild Classic at GoDinos.com/cc for $5.
