The cancellation of a free Toronto waterfront event during March break will leave a bitter taste for those with a sweet tooth.
Sugar Shack TO announced Tuesday that its 2025 event that features maple treats will not go ahead as originally scheduled.
“Due to a reduction in funding from sponsorship and the increase in production costs, the event has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event and focus on 2026’s return,” organizers said in a statement.
The event, sponsored by Redpath, was set to take place at Sugar Beach on March 8-9.
“This was not an easy decision for our organization,” said Mike Riehl, Chair of the Water’s Edge Festivals & Events Board of Directors.
“Sugar Shack TO has become a popular winter event for thousands of families across the GTA. While we’re disappointed to cancel this year’s event, we’re committed to returning stronger in 2026 to continue bringing this unique Canadian tradition to Toronto’s waterfront.”
Treats served at past events included two sugar shacks serving fresh Ontario maple taffy, maple infused comfort food, hot chocolate and cookies.

A warming station with bonfires, a maple sugaring demonstration, a lumberjack splitting logs, fun games and interactive activities were also part of previous events.
Organizers said Sugar Shack TO has grown into one of the city’s most popular March break events, drawing more than 12,000 visitors annually to the Toronto’s waterfront.
