Plans have been submitted for signage of a new supermarket store next to a pub on the outskirts of Bristol, two years after the store had initially been refused by South Gloucestershire Council. Signage for a new Tesco Express, which would be built on the corner of Tower Road South and Cadbury Heath Road in Warmley, were submitted in December.
It would be located at the site of the King William IV pub, known locally as the King Billy. The pub would remain in place, having already been partially demolished to make way for the new convenience supermarket.
In June 2021, Tesco applied to South Gloucestershire Council to build the store, which would see the extension and entrance porch of the pub demolished. This was refused in January 2023, however it was appealed.
The reasons for the refusal initially were concerns over the parking provision available, the number of deliveries and the loading bay, which will be located towards the front-left side of the store. The original decision made by the council was overturned in January 2024 and the new store has since been built but is not yet open.
Within the design and access statement submitted in July 2021, the land which was formerly part of the King William IV was “surplus to operational requirements of the public house”. It estimated that 25 new jobs will be created by the addition of the Tesco Express.
The latest documents submitted give details of the signage which would be located on the store. There will also be an ATM machine located to the left of the entrance. In addition, car parking would be located next to the existing pub parking.
The signage has yet to be approved, with the planned signage going to a consultation stage from Sunday, January 26.
