A man who was shot in Newtownabbey was an off-duty police officer.

The incident took place in the Beverley Road area of Newtownabbey, where cordons were in place as police attended the scene on Monday night.

The officer is currently receiving treatment for what the PSNI called “treatment for non-life-threatening injuries” in hospital.

A 29-year old man has been arrested and remains in police custody.

A police spokesperson said the incident is not being treated as terrorism related.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said “I can confirm that the injured man was an off duty police officer, who was taken to hospital and is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. My thoughts are with him, his family and we will offer every support to them while he recovers.

“While our investigation is at an early stage, we do not believe this is a terrorism related incident.

“A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene and he remains in police custody at this time.

“We will continue to liaise with other key stakeholders, including the Police Federation.

“As our investigation progresses I would appeal to anyone with any information, who was in the area around the time of the shooting, or with doorbell or dashcam footage, to contact Police on 101 and quote reference 1699 06/01/25.”

DUP MLA Pam Cameron urged anyone with information relating to the shooting.

The South Antrim MLA said: “I am shocked by the events overnight in a residential area in close proximity to my constituency office.

“It is important for all of us not to jump to conclusions as this is a live investigation and to allow the PSNI to do their work. I’m grateful for swift response from PSNI and I have asked to be kept updated around this serious incident.

“I understand that the victim is in a stable condition in hospital. I would urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Police directly or via Crimestoppers 0800 555 111”
