Ice warning continues after blanket of snow for parts of NI saw roads closed and vehicles stuck

A weather warning for snow and ice remains in effect for Northern Ireland until 11am today, with the Met Office warning that there may be some disruption to travel.

Last night, heavy snow fell quickly for some parts and a number of roads had to be closed as vehicles became stuck and police warned of “treacherous” conditions.

Just before 7am, the PSNI said in a statement: “Road users are advised to exercise caution due to icy roads throughout Northern Ireland. 

 

“Stopping distances increase greatly when weather conditions are poor, so slow down and leave a bigger gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front.”

Weather forecast

Earlier today, the Met Office forecast that snow showers would become more frequent across the north and west of Northern Ireland for a time this afternoon and evening – with up to 5cms on hills, especially the Sperrins.

Tomorrow is expected to see sunny spells and scattered wintry showers, with any possibility of snow contained to higher ground. It is set to feel bitterly cold, with a maximum temperature of 4C.

Road salting

As temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing tonight, the salting of roads on the scheduled network was planned to commence early this afternoon and continue overnight into Tuesday morning. Road users have been advised to exercise caution when travelling, particularly when driving on untreated roads.

Vehicles stuck

The PSNI have advised motorists to avoid the Broad Road/Coleraine Mountain area of Limavady. They said heavy snowfall has left a number of vehicles stuck in place, with traffic unable to pass.

Co Antrim crash

Frosses Road, between Ballymena and Ballymoney, was closed northbound earlier this evening following a multiple-vehicle crash. The road has now fully reopened to motorists, but police warned that road conditions in the area are treacherous due to the current weather.

Weather warning

A weather warning affecting all six counties in Northern Ireland came into effect at 3pm today, and will remain in place until 11am on Tuesday.

The Met Office warned that snow and icy patches may lead to some disruption to travel, as rain, sleet and snow showers will continue during this evening and tonight.
