It was a great night for ’60s homages; for bold, bushy ponytails; and for gowns with sculptural necklines that seemed to want to leap off their wearers’ torsos. It was a bad night for the good old penguin-suit tuxedo ensemble: Jewel tones and pattern prints dominated, and formal jackets as far as the eye could see were paired with bolo ties, ascots, and, in the case of Glen Powell, chest hair and a gold chain.
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, were a feast for the eyes – though as anyone who has ever attended one can tell you, sometimes a feast can leave you a little queasily overstuffed and needing to lie down. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo left their respective pink and green ensembles in 2024, and none of the “Conclave” cast came in papal garb. But pretty much everything else was on the table: experimental suiting, fantastical silhouettes, unusual colours, enormous hair. Below are 10 of our favourite looks of the night.
Kerry Washington
From a fashion-house perspective, Balenciaga won the night. Every single person they dressed looked fantastic, but Kerry Washington looked the best. She looked like a real movie star in that draped, strapless frock. And the hot pink dress – not just shocking pink, but alarming, jaw-dropping, disturbingly pink! – ensured it didn’t look blah. – Rachel Tashjian
Elle Fanning
Some other Balmain looks were bombs. But Elle Fanning’s champagne-and-leopard gown was a bombshell. The silhouette was classic princess fantasy, but the understated champagne topped with a bust in glittering leopard made for just enough surprise to hold interest. Elle wasn’t nominated this year. She attended as the date of her sister, Dakota, nominated for “Ripley.” But her look tonight is extending a winning streak that is sure to add to her reputation as a fan favourite when it comes to red carpet dressing. – Shane O’Neill
Zendaya
If your best-dressed list doesn’t have Zendaya on it, did you even do it right? In a burnt-sienna Louis Vuitton gown with a retro bodice and a silver Bulgari necklace with a dazzling bright aqua-coloured gemstone, the “Challengers” star was fully in old-Hollywood mode – Doris Day bullet-bra cups included. – Ashley Fetters Maloy
Keri Russell and Kate Winslet
Keri Russell, nominated for her role in “The Diplomat,” wore a white caped suit by Stéphane Rolland. It was a bold choice, and it paid off. The stretched lapel, maximal volume and ’80s-inspired styling all could have fallen short. None of it did. It was clean, powerful and innovative.
Kate Winslet, meanwhile, went a slightly more traditional route with her gleaming white Erdem ensemble. The jacket’s restrained black beaded details elevate this look into something rarely seen: a women’s suit with the formality of a gown. – S.O. & A.F.M.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie has made a very elegant return to movie stardom, and the dress she wore for the Globes is just the right uniform for it: a glittering, slightly hard bundle of chains that weave together and fall apart below the knee. It’s armorial, but vulnerable. – R.T.
Cooper Koch
What was wrong with the classic black-and-white tux, again? On some red carpets, a traditional tuxedo can look like a lack of imagination – but on a night when a striking number of men really Went For It (with mixed results), “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” star Cooper Koch, in Armani, was a literal sight for sore eyes. – A.F.M.
Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman, nominated for “Babygirl,” arrived in a backless Balenciaga gown from their 52nd couture collection.
The butterfly earrings, the big ’60s fall of hair, the easy draping that calls to mind a glittered sheet clutched in haste. She looked bouncy and fun and effortless in a way that said, “This isn’t my first Golden Globes and I know it won’t be my last.” It was glitzy and fun and glamorous and a teeeeeeny bit tacky. Just like the Golden Globes!
Extra credit for the marvelous Loewe look she sported last night constructed from mother-of-pearl. These are clothes worn by people with absolutely nothing to prove. – S.O.
Anna Sawai
The “Shogun” star’s spotless, well-starched, strapless custom Dior gown paired with her striking but restrained silver Cartier choker resulted in a look as clean, refreshing and crisp as the first bite of an apple. – A.F.M.
Selena Gomez
It’s just tough to wear Prada on the red carpet. The Italian house’s designs are always a bit vintage with some totally odd element thrown in. You have to be confident and authoritative, which Selena Gomez is, particularly at this moment in her career as an actor, singer and businesswoman. She really carried off this unusual pale blue dress. – R.T.
