Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, will represent King Charles at the funeral service of former US President Jimmy Carter in Washington DC.

The King’s younger brother, aged 60, is set to make a solo appearance at the Washington National Cathedral for the service on Thursday.


The Duke will pay his respects to America’s 39th president, who passed away on December 29 2024 at the age of 100.

The service is expected to draw all five living US presidents – Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Donald Trump.

The Duke of Edinburgh will attend the ceremony without his wife, the Duchess of Edinburgh, as he carries out this significant diplomatic duty on behalf of the British monarchy.

Carter’s state funeral arrangements began last Saturday with a motorcade through his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

The former president’s body was transported to Atlanta, where he will lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Center until Tuesday morning.

Following this, he will be flown to Washington DC. to lie in state at the US Capitol ahead of Thursday’s funeral service.

After the funeral ceremonies in the capital, Mr Carter will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn, during a private burial service in Plains, Georgia.

The six-day commemorations mark the passing of America’s longest-lived president, bringing together the nation’s political leadership to honour his legacy.

“It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of President Carter,” the King said.

The monarch praised Carter’s commitment to public service, noting: “He was a committed public servant, and devoted his life to promoting peace and human rights.”

Charles recalled Carter’s 1977 visit to the United Kingdom “with great fondness” and commended the former president’s “dedication and humility”.

The King’s message concluded: “My thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the American people at this time.”

Prince Edward’s attendance at the funeral comes after celebrating Christmas with his family at Sandringham, including his children Lady Louise Windsor, 21, and James, Earl of Wessex, 17.
