Regular ITV star Dr Amir Khan has been praised by his many social media followers after telling “the truth” live on Lorraine. The full-time GP, who is also known for his appearances on other shows such as Good Morning Britain, shared a clip on Instagram on Monday.
In the video, Dr Amir could be seen joining Lorraine Kelly in the studio via video link from his doctor’s surgery. It came as part of a discussion entitled “Should we put cancer warnings on alcohol?”
Dr Amir said: “The truth about alcohol, Lorraine, is that there is no safe level of alcohol to drink. Even those 14 unit limits recommended weekly by the NHS… it’s a compromise, but ideally no alcohol is better than some.”
The doctor went on to say he wanted to “put a myth to bed”, as he added: “Some people still believe that a small amount of red wine is good for your heart, and actually that was based on flawed research”. The GP explained that more recent studies show “the risks of drinking even a small amount of red wine outweigh the benefits”.
Captioning the update, Dr Amir said: “Talking about alcohol today on @lorraine. There is no safe amount of alcohol to drink, it’s linked to many cancers and it’s a myth that a small amount of red wine is good for you. Here’s what you need to know, hope it’s useful xx”
Fans have been quick to respond in the comments section, as one wrote: “Thank you Amir. Your advice is very much appreciated.” A second said: “Finally! Someone said it, alcohol is a poison and it has no real benefits”. A third added: “So glad I gave it up. Feel better too. Don’t miss it any more.”
