Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway opened up about her experience on ITV’s The Masked Singer, which aired on Sunday when she was revealed as Spag Bol.
Discussing her journey on the popular show, she confessed that neither her family nor friends were aware of her involvement. She shared: “Very exciting/traumatising for the family! I got my kids to watch. They were very confused about it saying, ‘Why are you forcing us to watch in real time?'”
“But, I didn’t know it wasn’t going to be revealed on Saturday, that’s how much in the dark you are. I forced them to watch in real time, and then they were like, ‘Ok, so we’re watching tomorrow then, are we, Mum?'”.
Kate also discussed the extreme confidentiality measures taken by the show to keep the celebrities’ identities concealed. She revealed: “One of the challenges is, they pick you up, they then pull into a field before you get to the location.”
“You have to cover all your skin and hair and they put a black visor on you, black jogging bottoms, boots and a T-Shirt that says ‘do not talk to me’. You’re not allowed to speak at all!”
Co-host Susanna Reid pointed out how Kate’s voice could give her away, agreeing, Kate admitted: “None of the staff and crew can speak to you, so I had to be silent which was a huge struggle to be honest. So when I began to sing I was just relieved to be able to make a noise.”
Despite finding it challenging to keep the secret, the presenter was full of compliments for The Masked Singer, thoroughly enjoying her stint on the series, reports the Mirror.
Kate Garraway, who performed Geri Halliwell’s song Look at Me while disguised as Spag Bol, managed to stump the shows celebrity detectives Maya Jama, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, and guest star Vicky McClure, who all failed to identify her correctly.
When host Joel Dommett unveiled the Good Morning Britain icon, the panel fell silent. Kate opened up about her experience, expressing: “I can’t sing and I kept telling them (the production team) that and they said it doesn’t matter.
“Just to have an incredible chance to come out dressed as spaghetti and waddle around trying to sing. It’s been so much fun and everybody’s been great.”
Remarkably, Kate wasn’t the lone revelation; the viewers of ITV also witnessed Bake Off sensation Dame Prue Leith become known as Pegasus.
Post-unveiling, she admitted: “I have say this is the most amazing experience. I’ve never sung a note. I’m tone deaf. I have been having lessons and I’ve got slowly able to at least make a noise.”
Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.
