Bristol Rovers are amongst a number of clubs keeping tabs on Cardiff City midfielder Joel Colwill’s situation this month, Bristol Live understands, with the 20-year-old currently impressing in League Two on loan at Cheltenham Town.
As first reported by Football League World, Rovers are understood to be one of numerous clubs interested in the Welshman whose short-term future at Whaddon Road hangs in the balance after an impressive first half of the campaign with the Robins.
A return of 12 goal involvements in 28 appearances for Cheltenham has seen Colwill attract external interest from clubs higher up the pyramid than his current loan side who were relegated from League One last season.
Michael Flynn’s team are currently 13th in League Two with the 20-year-old their top scorer on nine goals across all competitions, six of which coming in the league.
However, after such an impressive spell at Cheltenham, Cardiff are seemingly weighing up their options which could see the Bluebirds recall the midfielder to either loan him out to a League One club or use him themselves.
Alternatively, keeping their youth product where he is currently is also possible while recalling to sell hasn’t been ruled out either but would prove to be an extremely tough deal to complete considering his contract at Cardiff doesn’t expire until summer 2028.
According to Gloucestershire Live’s Cheltenham Town reporter Jon Palmer, the situation is expected to be resolved at some point this week with the Robins set to travel to AFC Wimbledon this weekend.
Bristol Live understands that a central midfielder is on Rovers’ list of priorities this month as they look to tweak Inigo Calderon’s squad during the January transfer window.

Last week saw loan midfielder Jake Garrett return to parent club Blackburn Rovers, as well as defender Michael Forbes to West Ham United, after an underwhelming spell that offered limited opportunities for the 21-year-old midfielder.
That leaves the Gas a man short in the middle of the park while they’re also currently having to deal with a mysterious injury to Kamil Conteh of which the severity is still unclear.
Admittedly, Colwill is of a different profile to Garrett and Conteh with Rovers in need of an improved goals and creativity output with just four teams in League One scoring fewer than their current total of 22.
This has been the 20-year-old’s first loan having come through the youth ranks at Cardiff while he also has five caps for Wales Under-21s.
