With the UK weather taking a turn for the worse, many of us are dreaming of sunnier climes. However, after the festive season, our wallets might be feeling a little lighter.
Fear not, there’s a stunning region in Portugal that offers lush rainforests and summer-like temperatures, all for under £100 this month. São Vicente, nestled in the expansive Laurissilva area, is a land of valleys and vineyards, boasting lush vegetation, volcanic caves, and charming villages.
It’s situated in one of Madeira’s most mountainous regions, extending to the Atlantic Ocean via winding roads. The village centre of São Vicente is beautifully preserved, with centuries-old cobbled streets hosting numerous cafes and bars for a midwinter sun-soaked drink.
At the village entrance, you’ll find the Capelinha do Calhau, a small chapel built by villagers in 1692, dedicated to Saint Vincent, believed to protect them from the harsh ocean. The baroque façade is carved into a solitary basalt rock, adorned with a mosaic made from riverbed stones.
In addition to its beautiful streets and churches, São Vicente also houses ancient volcanic caves formed during an eruption 890 thousand years ago. Unfortunately, due to an earthquake in 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic, the caves are currently closed to the public, reports the Express.
However, a museum on site provides insight into these unique rock formations.
São Vicente, a haven for nature enthusiasts, is renowned for its Indigenous Garden. This subtropical area spans approximately 1,500 square-metres and primarily features the island’s native flora.
It’s an idyllic spot for a leisurely afternoon walk, allowing you to appreciate the stunning natural surroundings at your own pace. With January temperatures averaging around 19 degrees Celsius, São Vicente offers a delightful respite from the UK’s winter gloom.
