BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent interrupted Monday’s programme to bring viewers urgent weather and travel updates.

During the broadcast, 53-year-old Sally informed viewers of significant snow-related travel disruptions, announcing that Manchester Airport had to ‘temporarily close due to heavy snow’.

Her co-host Jon Kay remarked: “That winter weather still causing problems this morning, Sally” prompting Sally to respond: “Absolutely right, Jon! Further snow, ice and rain are causing more disruption across the UK this morning.”

A breaking news banner then appeared on screen, leading Sally to declare: “Manchester Airport says it has shut both of its runways for the second time in two days because of heavy snow in the area.”

Taking to Twitter early on Monday, Manchester Airport provided an update to passengers, stating: “Our runways are temporarily closed due to heavy snow as our teams work hard to clear them as quickly as possible,” reports the Express.

They continued: “The safety of our passengers is our top priority and we appreciate your patience during this time. Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra travel time today. We will update you as soon as possible. Thank you.”

In a subsequent update at 7:15am, Manchester Airport confirmed: “Our runways are now open but as a result of the earlier closure some departures and arrivals may still experience delays.

“Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra time for your journey today. We would like to thank our teams for their hard work in getting the runways operational again. The safety of our customers remains our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and patience.”

Weather warnings are still in effect across much of the UK on Monday, and commuters are advised to prepare for snow showers, ice, and rain.

According to the Met Office, the harsh weather conditions may cause further travel disruptions, including flooding caused by heavy rain and melting snow. As a result, more than 60 flood warnings and 260 flood alerts have been issued.

This follows a weekend of heavy snow or icy rain across most of the UK.
