Roy Keane has claimed Trent Alexander-Arnold would be fortunate to join Tranmere Rovers let alone Real Madrid after his defending for Liverpool in the first half against Manchester United.

The game at Anfield went ahead despite amber weather warnings being in place from the Met Office after a safety meeting was held at the weekend.

Liverpool were the strong favourites with many tipping Arne Slot’s side to run rampant against a woefully out of form United side.

However, the two teams were evenly matched in the opening 45 minutes with nothing to seperate them.

United were most effective down their left wing as they created multiple chances with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate having to come to their rescue.

Alexander-Arnold was having a difficult time dealing with United’s attack and Keane held nothing back in criticising the full-back’s first-half display.

“It’s too easy those chances for United,” Keane said.

“We talk about how brilliant Trent is going forward, but Trent’s defending today – my goodness. It’s like schoolboy stuff!

“There’s talk about him going to Real Madrid. The way he’s defending, he’s going to Tranmere Rovers after this.

“He’s got to do better.”

Sky Sports presenter David Jones let out a chuckle to Keane’s remark, who remained steel-faced in his chair.

Jones asked Daniel Sturridge, who had his head in his hands while seemingly to avoid laughing, for his opinion on Keane’s remarks.

While smiling, Sturridge added: “No words. No words.”

Things got worse for Alexander-Arnold at the start of the second half when he gifted United the ball before Lisandro Martinez bagged the opening goal of the game.

It was the first time United found the net against Liverpool at Anfield in their last six matches.

Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain with no progress being made in contract negotiations.

He’s currently out of contract in the summer and Liverpool rejected an offer from Real Madrid earlier this week.
