Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has opened up after his side’s entertaining 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Red Devils went ahead in the 59th minute, with Lisandro Martinez unleashing a stunning effort into the top corner.

Liverpool were then able to turn the match around, however, with Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah both on target.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, though, United managed to earn a point through Amad Diallo – with the Ivory Coast international expertly finishing after a good delivery from Alejandro Garnacho.

United played well, having been outclassed by Newcastle their last league outing on Tuesday.

And Amorim has now come out fighting, with the 39-year-old insisting his team are ‘good’ despite their abysmal season so far.

“That should be a big issue for our players that even one person thinks you have the ability but not the character, we have to fight that and change that,” he told the BBC.

“I think it is really clear. When we are focused, when we fight for every ball, when we suffer and we are tired when the game is finished, we are a good team.

“If we don’t do that all the time then we are going to lose games. That is clear to everybody.

“We controlled very well the tempo of the game. Every time Liverpool had a chance, we controlled and had the ball for a moment. That makes a difference.

“You could see in the game, it was not like we are not suffering all the time because we controlled the ball, sometimes winning some fouls, controlling the transitions. It was a good game.”

United came close to beating Liverpool on Sunday, with Harry Maguire blazing over from close range with the goal at his mercy.

But Amorim opted against criticising the England international, with the 39-year-old adding: “For me, missing chances or playing badly with the ball is not the big issue.

“For me, the big issue is that Harry gave everything on the pitch. That is the most important thing.”

United skipper Bruno Fernandes has also reacted to the result at Anfield.

And the Portugal international feels brighter days lie ahead, with the midfielder stating: “We have been criticised and fairly. Our position in the table says it all, we have lost too many points.

“Even today we can’t be happy with a point. We need the points and we could’ve won the game at the end, but it’s a fair result. Both teams played good football.

“I’m pretty upset. If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the league, why can’t we do this everywhere? It frustrates me.

“Also, finally I did a proper performance. We said we need much more from ourselves to get more from this season.

“Being 2-1 [down] then scoring it’s good to get a point but we need more. Now we have an FA Cup tie at Arsenal and it is going to be very tough but we want to get to the final again.

“We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. Today we put in a real effort to the game, playing with some passion and heart is what is going to give you something from the game. You have to put in effort and that’s why we took something from today.

“It can’t stop here, We have to bring this frustration to the next game to understand this has to be the level. If we can do it an Anfield, we have to do it everywhere.”
