Liverpool have confirmed their match against Manchester United WILL go ahead as planned after a safety meeting was held at midday.

An amber weather warning was issued for Liverpool and Manchester by the Met Office with cautions in place about travelling.

Trains had been cancelled to Liverpool Lime Street until 12pm with safety concerns with thousands set to try and travel for the match at 4.30pm.

Liverpool City council’s Safety Advisory Group held a meeting this morning with the game going ahead as planned at that moment in time.

But another safety meeting was held at midday to make a final decision on postponing the match.

Liverpool announced on social media that the decision was made for the game to go ahead as planned with work underway to clear the pitch of the snow.

“Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned,” their statement read.

“Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions.

“We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today.

“If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there.”

Liverpool are looking to move eight points clear at the top of the table after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday.

Arne Slot’s side have been the runaway leaders in the Premier League for most of the season, dropping just nine points in 18 games.

It was just two years ago that Liverpool embarrassed United with a 7-0 thrashing at Anfield.

Now managed by Ruben Amorim, United’s woes have continued as they currently sit 14th in the table.

They’ve lost five of their last six league matches and are huge underdogs at Anfield this afternoon.

United are 23 points behind Liverpool in the table heading into today’s match with Slot’s side strongly favoured to win the title this season.

However, the Dutchman isn’t ready to crown his side champions elect just yet at the halfway stage of the campaign.

He said: “I have a lot of trust in the players in every aspect of football: their mentality, their quality on the ball, their work-rate.

“But for me it’s not about bringing it (the title) over the line because there are 20 games still left and still a long way to go.

“There have been so many seasons in the Premier League when so many teams who have a comfortable lead win it – but sometimes other teams come back.

“If you have this lead in the Eredivisie, you are 90 percent sure to win the league because it is nearly impossible to lose against the lower teams.

“But this week we have seen Chelsea lose against Ipswich, so that tells you it is impossible to look so far ahead. It is possible in the Eredivisie, but impossible here because there are so many good teams.

“So it’s a good lead – but it’s not enough to be comfortable. That’s a nice way to say it.”
