The latest episode of The Masked Singer UK was brought to a sudden halt by host Joel Dommett, who made a surprise announcement that left the studio audience booing. The eccentric ITV guessing game returned for its sixth series on Saturday (January 4) night, introducing a fresh batch of characters vying for the title.
Teeth, Snail, Tattoo, Kingfisher, Spaghetti Bolognese and Dressed Crab all performed for celebrity detectives Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, newcomer Maya Jama and Jonathan Ross, as well as special guest Mo Farah. After all the performances, the studio audience voted for their favourites to progress in the competition.
Spag Bol and Teeth received the fewest votes and found themselves in the dreaded bottom two. The panel chose to save Teeth, meaning Spag Bol was the first celebrity to reveal their true identity by removing their mask.
Before the big reveal, Mo, Davina, Jonathan, Mo Farah and Maya all made predictions about who could be behind the costume. With guesses including Ruby Wax, Julia Badbury, Judy Murray, Emma Raducanu, Anti Rani, everyone was eager to find out the truth.
Joel said: “I suppose there’s only one way to find out” before starting the traditional “take it off” chant. However, in an unexpected twist, he later rushed onto the stage to stop the cheers just as Spag Bol was about to remove their mask, reports the Mirror.
He said: “Wait, wait wait. wait a second. Hold up, hold up. There’s only one way to find out who’s behind the mask and apparently it’s to come back tomorrow night.”
Joel’s revelation left the celebrity panel stunned and the audience booed in response. Before signing off, Joel quipped: “I’ll be honest, I quite like being the villain” and continued: “Make sure you join us tomorrow night for the second part of our mega masked weekend when we’ll have six more incredible performances and not one but two unmaskings, including this one right here. Give it up for Spag Bol everybody. We’ll see you again tomorrow, goodbye”
The unexpected turn of events infuriated viewers, with one venting on social media: “That’s ridiculous that we have to wait till tomorrow to see who it is.” Another expressed disappointment: “This show is not good enough to warrant a 24 hour cliffhanger.”
A third lamented: While another complained: “So we’ve wasted our time watching this? ” Curious fans are now compelled to watch Sunday’s episode to discover the identity of the person behind the Spag Bol costume, and new performances from Bush, Pufferfish, Pegasus, Wolf, Toad in the Hole, and Bear await.
