The death of a popular and well-known Armagh bakery worker has been described as devastating news for the community.

Valerie Wilson, known as Val, passed away suddenly at her home in Caledon on Thursday.

She was known to many as the face of Johnston’s Bakery on Scotch Street in Armagh.

The business announced her passing, with a tribute message describing Ms Wilson as “the kindest soul”.

“We are absolutely devastated to be sharing this news,” the bakery said.

“Valerie (Val) was one of the best, the kindest soul who just loved the craic.

“You will be so missed by all your work family and the shop will never be the same.”

A death notice said Ms Wilson would be “lovingly remembered by her family and all the family circle”.

Many tributes have been posted online after news of her passing was announced.

One said: “Such good memories of working with Val in Johnston’s for many years. A woman with a heart of gold.”

Another said: “Such devastating news to start the new year. Valerie was one of the kindest ladies. All of us neighbours on Scotch Street will sorely miss her. Johnston’s will not be the same.”

And a third recalled: “She always had a big smile for customers and was just so, so friendly and an all-round lovely lady.”
